Buttons on the computer keyboard marked "kill", "delete" and "abort", together with descriptions of computer processes as parents and children where a "child" may die and a "parent" may not know about it (Banahan, Mike and Rutter, Andy, Unix - the Book, Sigman Press, Cheshire, 1990) speak volumes about a culture in which women who are not themselves specialists in the field play little part.
