Originally estimated to cost £164 million and to be completed by 1990, by the end of 1996 the costs of the new British Library had risen to £511 million and the first books had only just arrived (The Guardian, 3/12/1996, p3). The library eventually opened in autumn 1997. See also Spender, Dale, Nattering on the Net: Women, Power and Cyberspace, Spinifex Press, Melbourne, 1995, p151.
