Feminist critic Dale Spender says of Landow's work that the term hypertext is "relatively obsolete" and instead substitutes "multimedia", but this is a misunderstanding. Whereas hypermedia is always non-linear, what is described as multimedia may continue to take a linear structure ( see Nattering on the Net: Women, Power and Cyberspace, Spinifex Press, Melbourne, 1995, p42).
