Disabled people are beginning to reclaim terms which have been used abusively, however, in the same way in which lesbians have reclaimed "dyke" as a proud self-description. See for example Joyce Davies' account of why she prefers to describe herself as "lame" and Nancy Mairs' account of why she prefers "crippled" in With Wings (Saxton, Marsha and Howe, Florence [eds.], Virago, London, 1988, pp43-45 & 118-127).
