Name: Chariot to the Sun

Artist’s Statement: The sun gives energy. A sun powered Zimmer frame! I have used an old work pinny, which I got from the farmer’s market in Beverley Hills. The pockets can be used for mobile phone, pensions book, magazines or whatever!

Relationship: Due to the time allotted and as I am very busy finishing my gigantic Millennium Pegasus for Dudley Council, it caused me great difficulty to find the right piece of equipment to ‘adorn’.

Decision making process: Anne, the director of my Museum of Sculpture, telephoned the local hospital in Welshpool and arranged for me to visit the ward for senior citizens. Fiona Hutchison, the senior occupational therapist, was very helpful. Fiona showed me all the equipment used by her patients. I decided to use a Zimmer frame because it’s in the family – my 89-year-old mother takes her daily walks with one. “Wouldn’t it be wonderful, I thought, if there were solar powered Zimmer frames” – so I decided to make one.

I thought the apron was appropriate because it’s from an organic market and it’s not easy to carry a handbag, or shopping, or gardening tools when walking with the frame.

So here it is, a ‘practical’, sun powered Zimmer.
