The City Gallery is Leicester’s leading contemporary gallery, which is directly managed by Leicester City Council Art and Leisure Department and receives funding from East Midlands Arts. Entry to the Gallery is free to the public. We have around 60,000 visitors each year. The Gallery aims to provide the opportunity to the general public of all ages and abilities to become involved in the visual arts and crafts through exhibitions and events.

The Gallery is a non-profit making organisation. We generate some income through sales of art and craftwork. Sponsorship and funding also play a major role in enabling the Gallery to promote the work of artists and offer a rich and varied programme.

We have three gallery spaces including a fine art space in the main gallery, and a craft gallery. These spaces house a changing exhibitions programme and each has eight exhibitions per year. We balance our exhibition programme to include all art and craft disciplines and we show local, regional, national and international artists’ work. Touring exhibitions are hired regularly and include exhibitions from the Arts Council of England and the Craft Council. The upstairs gallery is for hire on a weekly basis and is a popular and well-utilised space.

The Gallery foyer includes a shop area which shows original crafts including jewellery, metal, ceramics, glass and textile. To stock the foyer shop we buy in work for re-sale from craftspeople – all work is handmade. We also stock a range of greetings cards, wrapping paper and art magazines.

The Gallery also runs a touring exhibitions scheme, ‘On Tour’ and an education programme. Our touring scheme involves touring exhibitions to 10 venues in and around the Leicester, including arts and entertainments venues and community centres. Within the area of education we have an extensive programme of events such as artists talks and workshops for all ages and abilities, connected to exhibitions programme. Schools and colleges participate in workshops and use information packs to follow trails around the Gallery. We run a Saturday Art Club for young people and our Education Officer holds regular lunchtime talks and tours in the Gallery
