adorn, equip media information
adorn,
equip is a national touring exhibition originated by The
City Gallery, Leicester. The exhibition examines issues around the design
of equipment and accessories for disabled people. Consultation between artists/makers,
designers and disabled people has inspired the production of unique, functional
objects and thought-provoking work. Most equipment and accessories are produced
only with function in mind, devoid of decoration or design. Items in the exhibition
are fashionable, dynamic, challenging, provocative and confrontational.
Mat Fraser (star of the Virgin mobile advert) has worked in conjunction with knit-ware artist Freddie Robins to produce a sweater with the slogan Short Armed and Dangerous'. International sculptor-extraordinaire Andrew Logan (famous for his Pegasus horses, sculptures of celebrities such as Zandra Rhodes and for organising the Alternative Miss World) has customised a zimmer frame and also a back brace for multimedia artist Ju Gosling.
Textile artist Susie Freeman has created a handbag for agoraphobics and a garment incorporating commonly prescribed medicines used in the treatment of arthritis, and disabled artist Nicola Lane explores the aesthetics of prosthetic limbs in a thought-provoking art work.
adorn, equip is a unique exhibition, three years in the making. It opened at The City Gallery on 8 September 2001 and is currently touring nationally.
