Hand Driven Trike
Ben Wilson

When Ben Wilson met David, a seven years old boy,
it became clear that David longed to ride a bike.
Because of David’s limited mobility,
conventional bikes were not suitable.

Having worked through several prototypes with David,
Ben’s design is based on that of a trike,
with the front wheel propelled by hand.
The steering mechanism works like a skateboard and
David can move his upper body to turn the trike
This makes the trike both fun to use,
and safe, as the seat prevents David from falling out.

The trike is made from both conventional components
and customised material.
It is covered in camouflage to add to its appeal.

Ben Wilson is a student of the Helen Hamlyn Research Centre
at the Royal College of Art.
He hopes to develop the trike for mass production.
