Braille Rail
Maggie Rose with the RNIB

Until recently, sight has been the only sense
catered for within the visual arts.
Maggie’s developed her Braille handrail
to redress the balance

In contrast to most gallery exhibits,
the handrail is there for people to touch it.

The handrail uses fun, nonsense words
written in a random sequence.
The text corresponds to grade one Braille,
Which uses the most basic vocabulary.

In 1999, Braille Rail was used by residents
at RNIB Tate House, a residential home
for older people with sensory impairment, who loved it!

Catherine is a resident of Tate House,
who is currently learning to read Braille.
At the time she was able to read grade one Braille,
but was having difficulty finding material to stimulate her.

Maggie Rose recently graduated from Chelsea College of Art
She has exhibited at the London Institute Gallery,
Braille Rail toured to residential homes in Yorkshire
during summer 1999.
