Ergonomic Blown Glass Beakers
Marianne H. Buus with Steve Rigby

Marianne Buus met Steve Rigby in October 1998,
at a seminar about disability and design
organised by The City Gallery

It was at this seminar that they identified a gap in the market
for glasses and beakers that are easy to grip.
They decided to fill this gap

The drinking vessels produced are a pleasure to look at and hold.
They also appeal to a wide audience
regardless of the user’s ability to grip

Steve has limited strength in his hands due to a spinal injury.
He has been ‘test-running’ batches of glasses sent by Marianne.
Marianne has responded to Steve’s detailed comments
when designing each new batch.

Through this teamwork designs were developed
that are both stylish and a pleasure to use.

Marianne says:
“I have found it most rewarding to be involved in this project
and present a selection of prototypes fulfilling the brief.”

Marianne Buus is a major figure within British glass design.
She is a graduate of the Royal College of Art,
and has exhibited in London, Denmark, Sweden and Japan.
She was included in the ‘adorn, equip’ work in progress exhibition.
Her working practice involves the manipulation of hot glass.
