Michael Malig with Meldreth Manor School, Cambridgeshire

Michael Malig has created an elegant and sensuous
piece of furniture that is also a game

Michael’s brief was to co-create furniture for disabled children,
some of whom have learning disabilities,
and some of whom are wheelchair users.

He started by joining a physio lesson
with a group of teenagers at Meldreth Manor School,

He decided to focus on individuals,
rather than attempt to design one piece
that would suit all the children’s different personalities.

Michael noticed one boy who loved to play skittles.
He would lie on his front on a bean bag,
and try to knock down blocks of wood with a ball.
This inspired Michael’s exhibition piece.

The stools are angled to support the body comfortably.
The skittles and balls can be stored underneath the stool.
Clockwork creatures have been added to provide moving targets!
