Sensory Activity Modules (S.A.M.)
Sarah Crawford with Ashfield School, Leicester
S.A.M. is an interactive installation for
hands and eyes.
Designed in consultation with a group of children
from Ashfield Special Needs School,
it is for feeling, watching and playing.
S.A.M. is made from very tactile
and visually stimulating combination of materials.
It has tufty surfaces of vibrant light gathering p.v.c.,
a spinning holographic mirror, floating sparkles
and bright fish that move through coloured liquids.
Sarah used the childrens ideas for S.A.M.
that she recorded during discussions,
practical workshops and handling sessions.
The design is based upon the childrens reactions
to materials, texture, movement, colour and shape.
Sarah role has been to transform the childrens ideas
into practical solutions.
Three wheelchair users can play S.A.M.
at once.
People who dont use wheelchairs
can use S.A.M. on the special wheelie stool.
S.A.M. is accessible, stimulating, and most of all, fun.
